OBESITY AND TELEVISION = HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE

The American Journal of Preventive Medicine, in its December 2007 issue, claims that obese children who watch too much television are more likely to have high blood pressure than heavy children who don't spend as much time in front of the TV (or on computers for that matter). This was the result of a study of 546 children between the ages of 4-17 who sought treatment for obesity. 43% of them had high blood pressure. The study showed that those who watched more than 4 hours of television per day had more than three times the risk of developing high blood pressure than those children who didn't watch that much television each day.

The study concluded that increased psychological stress and junk food eaten while watching TV were potential factors in developing high blood pressure. Those who watched TV between 2-4 hours had 2.5 times the risk of developing higher blood pressure than their peers.

The primary investigator, Dr. Jeffrey B. Schwimmer of the University of San Diego, California, explained that studies have shown that children who watch more TV experience more perceived psychological stress and the evidence is mounting that stress can alter how the brain communicates with other organs, affecting blood pressure and body fat accumulation and distribution. Hence, obesity results. We suspect that computer gamers experience the same psychological stress with the same results.

These findings point out the importance of limiting all children's TV viewing (and computer use) to less than 2 hours a day, which is also recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics. However, it is especially important for overweight and obese children to follow these guidelines. Parents are encouraged to have their children's blood pressure checked early and often by their pediatrician since it has been reported that many times children's blood pressure is improperly taken and reported.

We've always maintained (well Maria has at least - but now I'm convinced too) that children should not watch any television during the school year on week nights. The same holds true for computer use, except for school work. That way, they can focus their full attention on school work and activities, especially reading, which is such an important aspect of education. Also, from a parenting perspective, reading with your child is a way to strengthen your bond with them. Now there is scientific proof that it is better for them physically as well, although, as Maria points out, common sense has always indicated that was the case.
