If you want peace, you must first be peace. Ghandi said that over sixty years ago and it still is true to this day. But how can you be peace when your mind is constantly thinking, scheming or filled with negative thoughts and emotions? The answer is you must first eliminate or resolve the negativity generated within your mind before you will find peace, stillness and silence within. For many, this may seem like a tall order, but for those who know how, it can be simple.
I use Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) in my practice to help people eliminate the negative emotions and self-limiting thoughts in their lives so they can be more present. The basic principle of EFT is that "All negative thoughts, emotions and pain are caused by a blockage in their energy system". Whenever you are feeling anything other than peace, stillness and silence within, one or more of your meridians are blocked due to a prior trauma of some sort. It could be a physical, emotional or chemical trauma. Each of us has a meridian system, like having a series of pathways running between the cells of your body which brings life force to them. I liken it to a long straw with a top and a bottom and, as a metaphor, if the "straw" gets a little fluid stuck in it, it will become blocked and the energy won't be able to flow any longer. However, when you tap on the top of the straw, it dislodges the blockage and the pathway will be free to allow the life force energy to flow again. As the life force flows again, the negativity will automatically resolve itself.
The key is to recognize the negative feelings you're experiencing and address them specifically with words that bring up those feelings as fully as possible. We do this because the more you feel those feelings, the better the results will be. In other words, you must feel it to heal it. And the more you feel it, the more you heal it. This is the counter-intuitive aspect of EFT.
We don't work to instill positive affirmation like most systems do. We work to eliminate negative self-talk and emotions, leaving the person with their own innate positive emotions. Once we eliminate the negative emotions and pain, we can then introduce positive affirmations to reinforce whatever is already there. This is one of the only techniques that works to eliminate negatives rather than instilling positives and that causes many people to be reluctant to use it at first, but once they realize that they will not "grab hold of" the negatives as long as they're tapping simultaneously, they're fine with it.
You've been hearing a lot about the present lately, but here goes one more time. The reason most of us aren't present is because we are caught up in our mind. The mind keeps us in the past or future, but never in the present. It also holds us into our memory and our anticipation of what's about to happen in the future as we try to get ready for things to happen. In fact, the mind will pose a thousand questions just so it can provide a thousand answers. On the other hand, the deeper mind is where peace resides. When you meditate, you quiet the thinking mind and find deep peacefulness in the quietness and stillness that results from becoming present. Just being here. In the moment.
This is why I've chosen to teach and use EFT with most of the people I see and groups I conduct. By eliminating the hold that the thinking mind has upon each person by eliminating the meridian blockages, they are left with a free flowing meridian system and at peace in the present moment. As each new experience arises, they have the opportunity to feel it fully without prior determination or prejudice and they can feel the peace that comes in each moment.
Blessings,
Ted
