I know this from my own experiences. Only I usually think that I am the one that wants to know. That's because I've always thought that I am my ego and vice versa. Not true. I am not my ego. I have an ego. (Some say a huge one.) Well, at least I think I have an ego. Sounds awfully convoluted, doesn't it? But the truth is that each of us tends to think of themselves as their ego incarnate, rather than a being that also has an ego.
And my ego has always been the one that wants to know everything all the time. Maybe I've always been driven to know everything so that I can improve my self-image to others because of some insecurity and feel like I need to prove something to be accepted by others. I don't know. I just know that I've always thought that I wanted to know everything. Little did I realize that I already knew everything all the time.
In reality, everyone knows everything all the time. That is, if they allow themselves access to that knowing. Notice I didn't say knowledge. I said knowing. That was because the part of you that knows everything all the time is not your ego. In fact, you are usually not aware of knowing everything all the time because you spend the vast majority of your time functioning from your conscious mind (where the ego resides) and that part barely ever knows anything. It just thinks it does.
I've always said that the part that knows everything is the subconscious part of the mind, but as I recently had lunch with Walter Belling, he noted that the subconscious mind is just as finite as the conscious mind and, therefore, could not have access to all that knowing. When I questioned him about this, he noted that the access of which I'm speaking is part of each of us and it is that part of us that he calls "no mind". When I asked him what that was, he said that is the part of you that is not your mind at all. Yet, it has access to everything in the Universe or The All, as he calls it.
As I tried to pin him down about where the knowing is stored, he pointed out that it was my mind trying to define and understand all of it again and the finite mind can never understand the infinite. That's because the mind is finite and anything finite cannot comprehend the infinite. That's because anything that is finite wants to limit, measure and define and by its very nature, the infinite is not definable and is without limitation.
That's why the Tao te Ching says the Tao is unnamable, indefinable and unknowable. In fact, anything that names the Tao is incorrect because nothing can define it. The use of the name Tao is more of an approximation of that thing they're trying to define than an accurate definition. The same holds true for "knowing anything". In fact, all you can do is know about something. Otherwise, in order "to know" it, you would have to become it. You can know about the color green, but to truly know it, you would have to become green itself. Or you can know about China, but to truly know it, you would have to become China. Ironically enough, you would then no longer know about it and be able to describe it, you would simply know it as yourself, without any definition. In effect, you would just be it.
This is also true about yourself. When someone asks you who you are, what do you tell them? Most people reply with their work position or job title. This is because that's how they've come to identify themselves. "I'm a Mom", "I'm a single parent", "I'm a carpenter", "I'm an engineer", "I'm a judge", etc. Perhaps the best answer to that question that I ever heard was a woman standing in a circle of many others who responded "I am you". Maybe that's true, perhaps we're all the other - in reflection. Who knows? The question is: "Who are you?"

What I know is there is a certain part of each of us that is Divine. The only thing that restrains us from being and experiencing that Divine nature - is our minds. If we could just free ourselves from our minds, we would be able to be in touch with that part of us that knows everything all the time. What that would do for us remains to be seen, but to me, it would free us up to be present more of the time. Present with whatever is here in God's world. The flowers, the trees, birds, sky, sun. Everyone. Everything that's here is part of God's world and when you are present with it (i.e. when you mind chatter is quieted), you're naturally in a state of "no mind" and you have access to every bit of knowing in the Universe. To me, that is being awakened. At least in the moment. If you could then piece those moments together so that you are in that state most of the time, you might then be considered Awakened. But, then again, we all have that same capacity. Nobody is special. We all have that potential. Now it's up to you to fulfill your potential.
Ironically, you can't do that through effort, will power or practice. It can only be done through the Grace of God and your willingness to surrender to God. Again, as soon as I say that, questions pop up. And there is my ego mind waiting to raise more questions again. And I'm right back in that mind chatter state again, instead of in that "no mind" state of Grace. See how it can go awry?
I hope this gives you something to ponder. But, remember, don't think about it too much, because you'll just wind up back in that ego mind again trying to figure it all out. Instead, try to quiet your mind and be present with whatever is in your presence. Watch your breath as it goes in and out - be still and know . . .
Blessings,
Ted

If this article interested you, it is based upon the teachings and knowing of Walter Belling and Leonard Jacobson (click here to learn more about Leonard Jacoboson), two dear friends of mine.
Walter will be speaking at our Center on January 18th at 7 PM. It is highly recommended that if you want to attend, you make firm arrangements with our office well in advance since space is extremely limited. The cost is $20. and it is well worth it in my humble opinion. Walter will be far better able to explain all of this. Don't miss this wonderful opportunity to learn directly from his "no mind" state. Bring along your "stuff" and ask whatever questions you have.
